What happens during a Veterans Writing Workshop?
Every week, you’ll be given a new writing exercise that will help you get started on new pieces of writing. You can also use these exercises as “tools” to help you with ongoing writing projects. You’ll share those exercises the following week and get positive, constructive feedback from the instructor and the group.
I want to get my stories down on paper but haven’t written for a long time. Is this workshop for me?
Yes. Many of the best stories in our books were written by veterans who came to the workshop with that same question. We’ll give you the tools you need to help get your memories and thoughts down on paper.
Writing is something I’ve been doing for quite a while, and I’m looking for serious, useful feedback and instruction. Is this workshop for me?
Yes. Our workshops are attended by veterans who have been writing for years as well as those for whom writing is something relatively new. Our goal is to create the kind of environment where everyone can receive the kind of instruction and support they need to grow as writers.
Do I have to write about my experience in the military?
No. Some vets join the workshop because they want to write about their experiences in the military, while others choose to write about experiences from other parts of their lives––many do both. You are free to write about either.
Is your workshop open only to veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Our workshop is open to all branches of service, all conflicts. Veterans and active duty military who have served in Vietnam, Korea, the Cold War, and World War Two, as well as Iraq and Afghanistan, have all participated in our workshop and been published in our anthologies.
I was not in combat / not deployed / etc. Can I still participate in the workshop?
Yes. We believe that every veteran has a story, and that every veteran’s story deserves to be heard. “Military experience” is not limited to combat; many vets choose to write about other aspects of their time in the service (training, leave, etc.); once again, no one is required to write about their time in the military.
Is this a “writing therapy” group?
Absolutely not. While some veterans have told us that being in the workshop and writing about their experiences has been good for them in one way or another, we are, first and foremost, a writing workshop. Our goal is to help you write the very best stories you can, and that is what we focus on.
I may not be able to attend every workshop; can I still participate?
Yes. As long as you make an effort to attend as many sessions as you can, you will still be able to benefit from the workshop.
When does the workshop meet?
The workshop meets once a week for 10 weeks for two hours in the evening. (Click here for details and registration.)
