The Veterans Writing Workshop’s Veteran-Student Outreach Program provides schools with a unique and powerful way of connecting with veterans through the written word.
Students first study veterans’ stories published in Afterwords, the print anthology of the Veterans Writing Workshop. Then veteran writers visit the schools to read from their published works and engage with students in an open dialogue.

Meeting with the veterans was a very rewarding experience for me. It was great how easygoing and open the vets were, and that made it easier for me to ask questions. Hearing about the war from a non-stereotypical source cleared my mind from thinking about war as just grenades and shooting. It was a great experience and I'm glad that we had the opportunity to be a part of it.
